Freshwater salt marshes

The banks of a tidal river flood during extreme high tides. Plants that grow here are resistant to regular foot baths. Examples of plants growing along the Schelde are willow, Russian olive, Himalayan balsam and, by the transition to the tidal flats, reed, triangular club-rush and sea club-rush. All these plants together form impressive marshy flood forests.
