Oystercatchers on the Nieuwlandsrijd, Ameland, Natuurcentrum Ameland

The Nieuwlandsreid

The Nieuwlandsreid is located in the southeasterly part of Ameland. It is 400 hectares large and a unique marsh area for the wadden region. The Zoute Weide is situated in the northern section of this area.

  • Development

Toward the end of the 19th century, the Nieuwlandsreid was still a drift-sand plain where dune formation was taking place. The area was still suffering from attacks by the North Sea and Wadden Sea. When the Kooi-oerdstuifdijk was constructed to connect together the Kooiduinen west of the area and the Oerderduinen to the east in 1893, the opening to the North Sea was closed off and the entire area fell under influence of the Wadden Sea.

  • Flora

With the exception of some low dune tops, the Nieuwlandsreid is now one green plain, overgrown with sea meadow grass and other salt marsh plants.

  • Fauna

In the summer, the Nieuwlandsreid is intensively grazed by sheep and young livestock, in the winter by wigeon and geese.
