Schiermonnikoog

Schiermonnikoog is the most easterly lying inhabited Dutch Wadden Island. An important part of the island falls under protection of the National Park Schiermonnikoog. Although this island is very small and only has one village, it has an immense amount of nature, its own unique history and folklore and its own sources of income, primarily from tourism, but also from farming. The Schiermonnikoog's dialect is still spoken among several dozen inhabitants. The island has shifte around three kilometers eastward since 1500. The former island Bosch now lies buried under the east tip of the island.

  • National Park

A major part of Schiermonnikoog is National Park and therefore protected.

  • Shifting borders

Since 1500, the island has shifted 3 kilometers to the east. The former island Bosch is now buried under the eastern point of the island.
Since 1980, the Frisian island has shifted so far east that the tip of the Balg now lies in the Province of Groningen. Agreement has since been reached between the two provinces and the towns of Schiermonnikoog and Eemsmond as to the border designation. The part lying in Groningen has been added to the province of Friesland and the town of Schiermonnikoog.
