Nature studies on Schiermonnikoog

There are several forms of nature study on the island. The most important ones are with the Universities of Groningen and Amsterdam, the nature and bird watch and information and education via the National Park.

  • University

There are two biological field laboratories on the island. That belonging to the University of Groningen is located on the east side of the polder and is called the 'Herdershut' (shephard's hut). A hut for the shephard who had a herd of cows on the marsh used to be here. The laboratory belonging to the University of Amsterdam is located in the Groenglop. Part of the laboratory is a weather station on the Kooipad. In both buildings, students and workers perform scientific studies.

  • Nature and Bird Watch

Since 1985, a Nature and Bird Watch has existed on Schiermonnikoog. The Watch is active in various workgroups, such as the workgroup which helps to protect meadow birds in the polder, a sanctuary for birds that are smeared in oil or sick. The Watch also has a ringing station to ring birds. And lastly, the Watch organizes excursions and lectures.
