Nature on Terschelling

The nature areas on Terschelling are all managed by the State Forestry. The total area measures 95 square kilometers. The quickest way to familiarize yourself with the nature on this island is to take a walk from the North Sea to the Wadden Sea: straight across the island. You will run into all of the various biotopes that enrich the island's nature.

  • Richness

You will first see the sea, bordering the next to widest beach of Western Europe. Moving on, you walk through yellow dunes, which were not formed all that long ago. Behind these young dunes are the older grey dunes. Several woods have been planted in this last, extensive dune region. Then one finds oneself in a transition area of alder woodlands, bordering the open polder. The open polder boundary in the south is formed by the wadden dike. Behind the dike lies the extensive wadden region.
