Boschplaat

The Boschplaat contains the entire eastern part of Terschelling. This 4400 hectare large area is one of the richest nature areas in the Netherlands and therefore has been a State Nature Monument since November 1974. Many processes are taking place here. It is mainly a salt marsh region, however dune formation still occurs on a large scale. The Vaste Duinen and the Groede belong to the Boschplaat.

The Boschplaat has been left to run wild in recent years. People are not welcome here. In the meantime, broad rows of dunes have been blown away and the seawater penetrates deep into the salt marsh. Thanks to the absolute rest, the population of nesting birds is growing, with a diversity of species such as gulls, cormorants, spoonbils and even little egrets. The mayor is concerned that the Boschplaat will eventually disappear.
