Duck decoys on Terschelling

Duck decoys form prominent structures in the land. They were made by man long ago and are still maintained. Nowadays, there is hardly any chance of getting permission to build such structures: their character determines the polder too much. But luckily, they have been there for centuries and, since they are so characteristic for the polder, they are no longer allowed to disappear! For one who has never seen a duck decoy, they are easy to recognize by the group of trees (the decoy woods) in a primarily open landscape.

  • Seven decoys

There are still seven decoys on Terschelling. Three are found on the open polder: the Landerumerkooi, the Formerumerkooi and the Hoornerkooi. The other four lie 'outside of the dikes', on the Grië. The Grië can be described as a piece of polder that was once surrounded by dikes, but is no longer. It is situated behind the dike that cuts through Oosterend. They are: the Takkenkooi, the JanWillemskooi, the Horrekooi and the Rimkeskooi.
