Texel island fauna

The Marsdiep forms an insurmountable barrier for many land mammals and reptiles. For those birds, amphibians and mammals which have reached the island, they are often able to live on Texel in a different way or under different circumstances than on the mainland. We call this phenomenon island biology. Many land mammals were once brought to the island by man. For example, rabbits, rats and house mice. A new species of animal is regularly appearing on Texel, thanks to humans.
