Recreation and tourism on Vlieland

Vlieland makes an excellent vacation island. Every year, 155,000 people visit the island. There are extensive forms of recreation. Sometimes, local interests from the tourist industry come into conflict with the feelings for nature preservation. Disturbance of the birds and damage to the landscape can follow.

  • Facts and figures

    Just like on the other islands, recreation is the most important source of income for the islanders. Of the 155,000 visitors every year, 132,000 come with the ferry boat and around 10,000 come with the boat the Vriendschap from Texel. The rest are boaters that sleep on their boats at night.
    The total capacity for visitors for the island is around 7000 per night. This is not a exact figure since different standards are used by various other counts. Does one count the moorings in the yacht harbour too? And what about the sleeping couches in the living rooms of the bungalows on the Ankerplaats? How many beds are counted in private homes that rent out rooms?
