Amsteldiepdijk (Short Closure dike)

Looking at the Amsteldiepdijk from Ewijcksluis, Wieringen is visible in the background. Lake Amstel is bordered on the north by the Amsteldiepdijk. This dike (also referred to on Wieringen as the Short 'Afsluitdijk', or closure dike) was closed on 31 July 1924, which meant the end of the island Wieringen. Problems during its construction (settlement due to peat layers in the underground) resulted in a new marshy nature area on the inside of the dike ('The Verzakking', = the settlement). The construction of the road N99 was part of the Zuiderzee Works (despite the asphalt roads on Wieringen, it is still called the 'Betonweg' = concrete road). This national roadway split the island in half and forms a continual source of noise and traffic victims.
