Trischen

The sandbank Trischen is almost 300 hectare and can be seen from far thanks to the beacons. Trischen lies thirteen kilometers southwest of Büsum, by the Meldorfer Bucht and off the coast of Dithmarschen. Trischen is part of Schleswig-Holstein. Due to continual sand accumulation, dune and marsh plants started to grow here naturally in the 20th century. Land reclamation works and the planting of cord-grass accelerated the process. Nowadays, the dunes are strong eroding. The sandbank is declining and 'walking' twenty meters to the east every year.

  • Birds

Trischen is the most important nesting area for seabirds in Schleswig-Holstein.
Heavy storms sometimes destroy 70% of the nests. In July and August, around 60,000 shelducks gather here to molt. Since 1959, Trischen has been a protected nature area and is a designated zone 1 of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.

  • Test area for weapons

The Meldorfer Bucht is commissioned by the German Army to be used by weapon companies to test weapons around twenty days per year. The shooting practices and subsequent search teams with boats and helicopters disturb the birds dramatically.

  • Oil

Furthermore, the drilling platform 'Mittelplate', which extracts 1800 tons of oil daily, is located south of Trischen. The oil is transported by boat to Brunsbüttle. An accident with the oil would have catastrophic consequences for the Wadden Sea and particularly for the molting shelducks.
