Duck Decoy at Spang, Texel, Natuurmonumenten Texel

Duck decoy

A duck decoy is unusual and makes one curious as to what takes place hidden in the woods. Duck decoys are recognized by the Hunting Act and are registered methods for catching wild duck species. Decoys are a business; a 'catching business', occupied with catching the birds and performing related maintenance activities.

  • Special value

There are 170 (remnants of) duck decoys in the Netherlands. Sixteen of those are found on the Wadden Islands. There are also decoys on the east and north Frisian islands in Germany. Duck decoys are special nature areas with unusual cultural historical values. They are protected more or less by a 'demarcation ruling', which makes sure that peace and quiet is maintained within a circle marked by poles in the field. South Holland and North Holland duck decoys are often different from other decoys found in the Netherlands, although the working of a decoy is usually based upon the same principles.
