Sandbanks
The bottom of the North Sea is not as flat as one would think. Under the surface of the water lie hills of sand and gravel: the sandbanks. Off of the Belgium and English coasts, they are so close together that they form their own landscape. They differ in height, width and length, but all lie parallel to the coastline. These banks are very important for bottom life and seabirds. They also function as a nursery for fish.
