Salt marshes

The old natural (undiked) salt marsh landscape, the land that was raised into wierden and where farmers had their cattle, is still present. The same bird species still fly around the area and the same plant species battle with the salty conditions. Plants that cannot tolerated salt or brackish water do not survive here. In order to protect these habitats and the many birds that nest here, the nature areas are closed to the public.

However, one can observe some of the marshes from the dike, for example, by the Westernieland close to Pieterburen. The best place to see all of it is Noordpolderzijl. Some areas belong to the Groninger Landschap in the west and some to Natuurmonumenten in the east. Excursions are occassionally offered by the respective organizations.
