Sea wormwood
You won't mistake this plant as you walk on a salt marsh through a group of sea wormwood plants. They emit a strong lavender-like odor, even the dead dried up plants that still stand in the winter. From a distance, the plant is easy to identify by its silver-gray color. You see silver fields of sea wormwood growing between the purple sea lavender. Sea wormwood grows almost exclusively on slightly elevated, sandy borders of flowing gullies in salt marshes. It is the last plant to flower on the salt marsh but its flowers are very small.

Sea wormwood is considered a therapeutic herb. The fragrant branches of the plant are often put into linen closets and mattresses to drive out fleas and moths. The Texel's name for sea wormwood is 'flea herb'. The German name 'Beifuß' refers to the habit of putting branches of sea wormwood into shoes to prevent tired feet. Sea wormwood cannot cope well with grazing. Since the sheep stock on the German salt marshes decreased by one third in the 1990s, the species has become much more prevalent in that area. This species can withstand salt. It is excreted from the plant via the leaves.
